Description

The Thirukkuṛaḷ is a classic Tamilsangamliterature consisting of 1330 couplets or Kurals. It wasauthoredby Thiruvalluvar.

The Thirukkuṛaḷ is one of the most important works in theTamillanguage. It is structured into 133 chapters, each containing10couplets, for a total of 1330 couplets. The 133 chaptersaregrouped into three sections
:
Aṟattuppāl - Aṟam (Dharma) (1-38)
Poruṭpāl - Poruḷ (Artha) (39-108)
Kāmattuppāl - Inbam (Kama) (109-133)

A couplet or kuṛaḷ consists of seven cirs, with four cirs onthefirst line and three on the second. A cir is a single oracombination of more than one Tamil word. For example,Thirukkuṛaḷis a cir formed by combining the two words thiru and‘’kuṛaḷ. Aramcontains 380 verses, Porul with 700 and Inbam with250.
