Ibnu Katsir menulis tafsir Qur'an yangterkenalyang bernama Tafsir Ibnu Katsir. Hingga kini, tafsirAlquranal-Karim sebanyak 10 jilid ini masih menjadi bahan rujukandalamdunia Islam.

Tafsir Qur'an ini dianggap sebagai ringkasan daritafsirsebelumnya oleh al-Tabari, Tafsir al-Tabari. Hal initerutamapopuler karena menggunakan hadits untuk menjelaskan setiapayat danbab dari Al-Qur'an.

Metode yang diginakan Ibnu Katsir dalam menafsirkanAl-Qur'an,yakni:

- Tafsir yang paling benar adalah tafsir Alquran denganAlquransendiri.
- Selanjutnya bila penafsiran Alquran dengan Alqurantidakdidapatkan, maka Alquran harus ditafsirkan dengan hadisNabiMuhammad, sebab menurut Alquran sendiri Nabi Muhammadmemangdiperintahkan untuk menerangkan isi Alquran.
- Jika yang kedua tidak didapatkan, maka Alquran harusditafsirkanoleh pendapat para sahabat karena merekalah orang yangpalingmengetahui konteks sosial turunnya Alquran.
- Jika yang ketiga juga tidak didapatkan, maka pendapat dariparatabiin dapat diambil.

Ibn Kathir writesthatfamous tafsir called Tafsir Ibn Kathir. Until now,theinterpretation of the Koran al-Karim as many as 10 volumesremainsa reference material in the Islamic world.

Interpretation of the text is considered as a summary oftheearlier tafsir by al-Tabari, Tafsir al-Tabari. It isespeciallypopular because it uses hadith to explain each verse andchapter ofthe Qur'an.

The method diginakan Ibn Kathir in interpreting theQur'an,namely:

- Interpretation of the most correct interpretation of theKoranis the Koran itself.
- Furthermore, if the interpretation of the Koran by the Koranisnot obtained, then the Koran must be interpreted withthetraditions of the Prophet Muhammad, the Koran itselfbecause,according to the Prophet Muhammad was ordered to explainthecontents of the Koran.
- If the latter is not obtained, then the Koran must beinterpretedby the opinion of friends because they're the people whoknow theirsocial context decline in the Qur'an.
- If the third is not obtained, the opinion of the Successors canbetaken.
