The leopard /ˈlɛpərd/ (Panthera pardus) is one ofthe five "big cats" in the genusPanthera. It is a member ofthe Felidae familywith a wide range in regionsof sub-Saharan Africa, West Asia, the MiddleEast, South andSoutheastAsia to Siberia. Fossil records found in Italysuggest that in the Pleistoceneit ranged as far as Europe.

Compared to other members of Felidae, the leopard has relativelyshort legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar inappearance to the jaguar, but is smaller and more lightlybuilt. Its fur is marked withrosettes similar to those of thejaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more denselypacked, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguars do.Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are knownas black panthers.

The leopard's success in the wild is due to its well camouflagedfur, its opportunistichunting behavior, broad diet andstrength to move heavy carcass into trees, its ability toadapt to various habitats rangingfromrainforest, steppe to arid and montane areasand to run at speeds up to 58 kilometres per hour(36 mph).
