Tras haber destacado como furibundo fustigador de lasectacristiana en su juventud, una milagrosa aparición deJesúsconvirtió a San Pablo en el más ardiente propagandistadelcristianismo, que extendió con sus predicaciones más alládelpueblo judío, entre los gentiles: viajó como misionero porGrecia,Asia Menor, Siria y Palestina y escribió misivas (lasEpístolas) adiversos pueblos del entorno mediterráneo. Losesfuerzos de SanPablo para llevar a buen fin su visión de unaiglesia mundialfueron decisivos en la rápida difusión delcristianismo y en suposterior consolidación como una religiónuniversal. Ninguno de losseguidores de Jesucristo contribuyó tantocomo él a establecer losfundamentos de la doctrina y la prácticacristianas.

Las fuentes fundamentales acerca de la vida de SanPablopertenecen todas al Nuevo Testamento: los Hechos de losApóstoles ylas catorce Epístolas que se le atribuyen, dirigidas adiversascomunidades cristianas.
Saulo (tal era su nombre hebreo) nació en el seno de unafamiliaacomodada de artesanos, judíos fariseos de culturahelenística queposeían el estatuto jurídico de ciudadanos romanos.Después de losestudios habituales en la comunidad hebraica dellugar, Saulo fueenviado a Jerusalén para continuarlos en la escuelade los mejoresdoctores de la Ley, en especial en la del famosorabino Gamaliel.Adquirió así una sólida formación teológica,filosófica, jurídica,mercantil y lingüística (hablaba griego,latín, hebreo yarameo).

No debía, sin embargo, residir en Jerusalén el año 30, en elmomentode la crucifixión de Jesús; pero habitaba en la ciudadsantaseguramente cuando, en el año 36, fue lapidado el diáconoEsteban,mártir de su fe. En concordancia con la educación quehabíarecibido, presidida por la más rígida observancia de lastradicionesfarisaicas, Saulo se significó por aquellos años comoacérrimoperseguidor del cristianismo, considerado entonces unasectaherética del judaísmo. Inflexiblemente ortodoxo, el jovenSaulo deTarso estuvo presente no sólo en la lapidación de Esteban,sino quese ofreció además a vigilar los vestidos de losasesinos.

Los jefes de los sacerdotes de Israel le confiaron la misióndebuscar y hacer detener a los partidarios de Jesús en Damasco.Perode camino a esta ciudad, Saulo fue objeto de un modo inesperadodeuna manifestación prodigiosa del poder divino:
26:12 Ocupado en esto, iba yo a Damasco con poderes y en comisióndelos principales sacerdotes,
26:13 cuando a mediodía, oh rey, yendo por el camino, vi una luzdelcielo que sobrepasaba el resplandor del sol, la cual me rodeó amí ya los que iban conmigo.
26:14 Y habiendo caído todos nosotros en tierra, oí una voz quemehablaba, y decía en lengua hebrea: Saulo, Saulo, ¿por quémepersigues? Dura cosa te es dar coces contra el aguijón.
26:15 Yo entonces dije: ¿Quién eres, Señor? Y el Señor dijo: YosoyJesús, a quien tú persigues.
26:16 Pero levántate, y ponte sobre tus pies; porque para estoheaparecido a ti, para ponerte por ministro y testigo de lascosasque has visto, y de aquellas en que me apareceré a ti,
26:17 librándote de tu pueblo, y de los gentiles, a quienes ahorateenvío,

 Having emerged as furious castigator of the Christiansectin his youth, a miraculous apparition of Jesus turned to St.Paulin the most ardent propagandist of Christianity, which spreadwithhis preaching beyond the Jewish people, among the nationshetraveled as a missionary by Greece, Asia Minor, Syria andPalestineand wrote letters (Epistles) to various peoples oftheMediterranean environment. St. Paul's efforts to bring tofruitionhis vision of a world church were instrumental in the rapidspreadof Christianity and its subsequent consolidation as auniversalreligion. Saul (such was his Hebrew name) was born into a wealthy familyofartisans, Jewish Pharisees Hellenistic culture that possessedthelegal status of Roman citizens. 26:17 delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles, towhomI am sending,
26:18 to open their eyes to turn them from darkness to lightandfrom the power of Satan to God; to receive, by faith that is inme,forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them whicharesanctified.
