لسان العرب هو أحد معاجم اللغة العربية ويعدّمنأشملها وأكبرها، ألّفه ابن منظور وجمع مادته من خمسة مصادرهي:[1]

يحوي هذا المعجم 80 ألف مادة، أي بزيادة 20 ألف مادة علىالقاموسالمحيط. وهو من أغنى المعاجم بالشواهد، وهو جيد الضبط ويعرضالرواياتالمتعارضة ويرجح الأقوال فيها. ويذكر المعجم ما اشتق من اللفظمنأسماء القبائل والأشخاص والأماكن وغيرها. ويعدّ هذا المعجمموسوعةلغوية وأدبية لغزارة مادته العلمية واستقصائه واستيعابه لجُلّمفرداتاللغة العربية. وقد رتبه ابن منظور على الأبواب والفصول فجعلحروفالهجاء أبواباً أولها باب الهمزة وآخرها باب الألف اللينة. وجعللكلحرف من هذه الأبواب فصولاً بعدد حروف الهجاء، وفي الباب الواحدوالفصليراعي الترتيب الهجائي في الحرف الثاني من الكلمات الواردة فيكل بابوفصوله، وقد رتب الكلمات على أواخرها، فما كان آخره اللام تجدهفي باباللام.
أراد ابن منظور بكتابه أن يجمع بين صفتين: الاستقصاء والترتيب؛ إذكانتالمعاجم السابقة –كما يقول هو– تعنى بأحد هذين الأمرين دونالآخر، وأخذعلى نفسه أن يأخذ ما في مصادره الخمسة بنصه دون خروجعليه، واعتبر هذاجهده الوحيد في الكتاب، وتبرأ من تبعة أية أخطاءمحتملة بأن ما قد يقعفي الكتاب من خطأ هو من الأصول، وإن تصرف قليلافي النهاية فغير شيئاًمن ترتيبها.
