القرآن الكريم هو كلام الله تبارك وتعالى أنزل على سيدنا محمد صلىالله عليه وسلـم بواسطة الوحي جبريل عليه السلام المتعبد بتلاوتهالمنقول إلينا بالتواتر المبدوء بسورة الفاتحة المنتهي بسورةالناس.
يتكون القرآن الكريم من ثلاثين جزءًا. تحتوي هذه الأجزاء على ستينحزبًا. وتحتوي الأحزاب على مئتين وأربعين ربعًا. وعدد سور القرآنالكريم هي 114 سورة، منها ست وثمانون سورة مكيه( أي نزلت في مكهالمكرمه وتتكلم في معظمها عن العقيدة والقيامة والبعث والجزاء والجنهوالنار والتبشير والتحذير والوعيد)، أما عدد السور المدنيه فهي ثمانيةوعشرون سورة وتتكلم في معظمها عن الأمور الحياتيه للناس ومعاملاتهموالأمور التشريعيه ونحوه.
وتعرف السور المكيه: بأنها السور التي نزلت قبل الهجرة، ولو في غيرمكة المكرمة. وتعرف السور المدنيه: بأنها السور التي نزلت بعد الهجرة،ولو في غير المدينة المنورة.
وعدد آيات القرآن الكريم هي 6236 آية، وعدد كلماته 77439 كلمة، وعددحروفه 323670 حرفًا، وتعتبر كلمة (فأسقيناكموه) أكبر كلمة في القرآنالكريم.
وأول ما نزل من القرآن الكريم هي الآيات الكريمة التى نزلت على سيدنامحمد وهو في الغار عندما أمره جبريل عليه السلام فقال له يا محمد:اقرأ، قال له سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلـم: ما أنا بقارئ، فقال لهجبريل عليه السلام:( اقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق، خلق الانسان من علق،اقرأ وربك الأكرم، الذي علم بالقلم، علم الإنسان مالم يعلم ) فكانتهذه الآيات أول الآيات التي نزلت على سيدنا محمد صلوات ربي وسلامهعليه. وفي القرآن الكريم سجدات تلاوة وعددها 14 سجدو ذكرت في السورالتالية : ( الأعراف، الرعد، النحل، الاسراء، مريم، الحج، الفرقان،النمل، السجدة، ص، فصلت، النجم، الانشقاق، العلق ).
واستغرق وقت نزول القرآن على سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلـم 23 سنةحتى تم، وتعد سورة البقرة أطول سور القرآن الكريم ب 286 آيه، وتعدسورة الكوثر أقصر سورة في القرآن الكريم ب 3 آيات فقط.
أما عن أسماء بعض السور فقد سميت بعض السور بأسماء الله الحسنى مثلسورة: (الرحمن، الأعلى، النور)، وسميت بعض السور بأسماء الأنبياء مثلسورة: ( موسى، طه، يس، إبراهيم، هود، ويونس عليهم السلام ) .
وبعض السور قد سميت بأسماء الحيوانات مثل سورة: (النحل، النمل، وغيرها).
وهناك سورة واحدة في القرآن لا يجوز البدء فيها بقول بسم الله الرحمنالرحيم، وهي سورة التوبة لأنها نزلت بالسيف فلا يجوز فيها البسملهلأنها رحمه.
