While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll’s putative useofcomplex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his allegeduseof opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through therabbithole, pursuing “The dream-child moving through a land / Ofwonderswild and new.” There they encounter the White Rabbit, theQueen ofHearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among amultitude ofother characters–extinct, fantastical, and commonplacecreatures.Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathomthemeaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out tobe“curiouser and curiouser,” seemingly without moral or sense.Formore than 130 years, children have reveled in thedelightfullynon-moralistic, non-educational virtues of thisclassic. In fact,at every turn, Alice’s new companions scoff at hertraditionaleducation. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that hetook the“regular course” in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branchesofArithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, andDerision.
