What is a Compass? A compass is a navigational instrument thatshowsdirections in a frame of reference that is stationaryrelative tothe surface of the earth. The frame of referencedefines the fourcardinal directions (or points) – north, south,east, and west.Intermediate directions are also defined. Usually,a diagram calleda compass rose, which shows the directions (withtheir names usuallyabbreviated to initials), is marked on thecompass. When the compassis in use, the rose is aligned with thereal directions in the frameof reference, so, for example, the "N"mark on the rose reallypoints to the north. Frequently, inaddition to the rose orsometimes instead of it, angle markings indegrees are shown on thecompass. North corresponds to zerodegrees, and the angles increaseclockwise, so east is 90 degrees,south is 180, and west is 270.These numbers allow the compass toshow azimuths or bearings, whichare commonly stated in thisnotation.
