Description

Humayun Azad was a Bangladeshi author,poet,scholar and linguist. He wrote more than seventy titles. Heisregarded and honored as the most powerful and influential writerinthe history of modern Bengali literature. His writingsagainstreligious fundamentalism received both positive andnegativereviews. He was threatened and attacked by Islamistfundamentalistgroups for his writings.

On 12 August 2004, Azad was found dead in his apartment inMunich,Germany, where he had arrived a week earlier to conductresearch onthe nineteenth century German romantic poet HeinrichHeine, severalmonths after the Islamists' machete attack on him ata book fair,which had left him grievously injured. But he wasburied inRarhikhal, his village home in Bangladesh as doctorsdenied to takehis body for medical research, as several days hadpassed to reachhis body to Bangladesh from Germany.
