হুমায়ূন আহমেদ বিংশ শতাব্দীর বাঙ্গালিজনপ্রিয়কথাসাহিত্যিকদের মধ্যে অন্যতম। বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা পরবর্তীশ্রেষ্ঠজনপ্রিয় লেখক হিসেবে তাকে বিবেচনা করা হয়।

তিনি একাধারে ঔপন্যাসিক, ছোটগল্পকার, নাট্যকার এবং গীতিকার। বলাহয়,বাংলা কল্পবিজ্ঞান সাহিত্যের তিনি পথিকৃৎ। নাটক ও চলচ্চিত্রপরিচালকহিসাবেও তিনি সমাদৃত। ২০১১ পর্যন্ত তাঁর প্রকাশিত গ্রন্থেরসংখ্যা দুইশতাধিক। বাংলা কথাসাহিত্যে তিনি সংলাপপ্রধান নতুন শৈলীরজনক। অতুলনীয়জনপ্রিয়তা সত্বেও তিনি অন্তরাল জীবন-যাপন করেন এবংলেখলেখি ওচিত্রনির্মাণের কাজে নিজেকে ব্যস্ত রাখেন।

Humayun Ahmed was a Bangladeshi writer, dramatist, screenwriter,andfilmmaker. His breakthrough was his debut novel NonditoNorokepublished in 1972. He wrote over 200 fiction and non-fictionbooks,all of which were bestsellers in Bangladesh. Ahmed's writingstyleis characterized as magical realism. His books were the topsellersat the Ekushey Book Fair during the 1990s and 2000s. He wontheBangla Academy Award and the Ekushey Padak award forhiscontribution to Bengali literature.

In the early 1990s, Ahmed emerged as a filmmaker. He went on tomakea total of eight films - each based on his own novels. Hereceivedsix Bangladesh National Film Awards in differentcategories for thefilms Daruchini Dwip, Aguner Poroshmoni andGhetuputra Komola.

Novels
Ahmed’s debut novel Nondito Noroke (In Blissful Hell) waspublishedin 1972 while he was still a university student. From hisveryfirst novel, his themes included the aspirations ofaveragemiddle-class urban families and portrayed quintessentialmoments oftheir lives. His second novel was ShonkhonilKaragar.

Ahmed wrote fictional series featuring recurring characters suchasHimu (15 novels), Misir Ali (10 novels) and lessfrequently,Shubhro. He wrote several novels based on the BangladeshLiberationWar – Aguner Poroshmoni, Srabon Megher Din, and Jyotsna OJononirGolpo. His romantic novels included: Badol Diner ProthomKodomPhool, Noboni, Aj Dupure Tomar Nimontran, and Tumi AmaiDekechhileChhutir Nimontrane.

Ahmed wrote four autobiographies - Hotel Graver Inn, AmarChelebela,Rong Pencil and Fountain Pen.

Ahmed's first television drama was Prothom Prohor (1983),directedby Nawazesh Ali Khan. His first drama serial was Ei ShobDin Ratri(1985).
