পূর্ণেন্দুশেখর পত্রী ছদ্মনাম সমুদ্রগুপ্ত একজন বিশিষ্ট ভারতীয়বাঙালিকবি, ঔপন্যাসিক, প্রাবন্ধিক, শিশুসাহিত্যিক, সাহিত্য গবেষক,কলকাতাগবেষক, চিত্র-পরিচালক ও প্রচ্ছদশিল্পী।
পূর্ণেন্দু পত্রীর জন্ম বর্তমান পশ্চিমবঙ্গের হাওড়া জেলারনাকোলে।পিতা পুলিনবিহারী পত্রী, মা নির্মলা দেবী। ম্যাট্রিকপরীক্ষায়উত্তীর্ণ হওয়ার পর পারিবারিক কলহের কারণে পৈত্রিক ভিটেছেড়ে চলেআসেন কলকাতায়। ১৯৪৯ সালে ইন্ডিয়ান আর্ট কলেজে ভর্তি হনবাণিজ্যিকশিল্পকলা বা কমর্শিয়াল আর্টের ছাত্র হিসেবে। যদিও নানাকারণে এইপাঠক্রম শেষ করা তাঁর পক্ষে সম্ভব হয়নি। ছেলেবেলায় বাগনানেরবিশিষ্টকমিউনিস্ট নেতা অমল গাঙ্গুলির সংস্পর্শে এসে কমিউনিস্ট পার্টিরনানানসাংস্কৃতিক কাজকর্মের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে পড়েছিলেন। কলকাতায় অভিভাবককাকানিকুঞ্জবিহারী পত্রীর চলচ্চিত্র পত্রিকা চিত্রিতা ওসাহিত্যপত্রদীপালি-তে তাঁর আঁকা ও লেখার সূচনা হয়। পঞ্চাশের দশকেরশুরুতেকমিউনিস্ট পার্টির সক্রিয় সদস্য হয়ে পড়লে রাজনীতি ওসাহিত্যচর্চাউভয়েই একসঙ্গে চালাতে থাকেন।
১৯৫১ সালে তাঁর প্রথম কাব্যগ্রন্থ একমুঠো রোদ প্রকাশিত হয়। ১৯৫৮সালেপ্রকাশিত প্রথম উপন্যাস দাঁড়ের ময়না মানিক পুরস্কার লাভ করে।তাঁরঅন্যান্য কাব্যগ্রন্থগুলি হল শব্দের ঠিকানা (১৯৭৫), সূর্যোদয়তুমিএলে (১৯৭৬) আমাদের তুমুল হৈ-হল্লা (১৯৮০) ও গভীর রাতেরট্রাঙ্ককল(১৯৮১), আমিই কচ আমিই দেবযানী ইত্যাদি। সাহিত্য গবেষকশিশিরকুমার দাশতাঁর কাব্য সম্পর্কে মন্তব্য করেন, ছন্দের কৌশল,প্রতিমা গঠনেরস্পষ্টতা এবং কথনভঙ্গির ঘরোয়া চাল তাঁর কবিতার প্রধানবৈশিষ্ট্য।পূর্ণেন্দু পত্রীর অন্যান্য উপন্যাসের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্যভোমরাগুড়ি,মালতীমঙ্গল ইত্যাদি। রূপসী বাংলার দুই কবি তাঁর একটিবিখ্যাতপ্রবন্ধগ্রন্থ। পূর্ণেন্দু পত্রী কলকাতা সম্বন্ধে প্রায় একডজনগ্রন্থ রচনা করেছিলেন। এগুলির মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য শহর কলকাতারআদিপর্ব, বঙ্গভঙ্গ, কি করে কলকাতা হল, ছড়ায় মোড়া কলকাতা,কলকাতাররাজকাহিনী, এক যে ছিল কলকাতা ইত্যাদি। জীবনের শেষপর্বেবঙ্কিমচন্দ্রচট্টোপাধ্যায়কে নিয়ে এক বিশাল গবেষণার কাজ শুরুকরেছিলেন। মৃত্যুরপূর্বে ১৯৯৬ সালে তার প্রথম খণ্ড বঙ্কিম যুগপ্রকাশিত হয়।শিশুসাহিত্যেও তিনি ছিলেন এক জনপ্রিয় লেখক। ছোটোদেরজন্য লিখেছেনআলটুং ফালটুং, ম্যাকের বাবা খ্যাঁক, ইল্লীবিল্লী, দুষ্টুররামায়ণ,জুনিয়র ব্যোমকেশ, যজাম্বো দি জিনিয়াস, প্রভৃতি হাসির বই।আমারছেলেবেলা নামে তাঁর একটি স্মৃতিকথাও রয়েছে। সামগ্রিকসাহিত্যকর্মেরজন্য পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার তাঁকে বিদ্যাসাগর পুরস্কারে ভূষিতকরেন।
