R-3D-2 is a tool aimed at professional users -such as engineers, designers, sales people, quality control,realtors, surveyors, archaeologists - who need to obtain a 3Dreconstruction model from either video or a series of images forapplications such as reverse engineering, monitoring constructionprogress, archaeologists, sales, remote sensing, etc.

The camera has a number of modes for maximum flexibility:automatic, manual, macro and infinity. Moreover, the camera canlock the current aperture to avoid sudden changes in lightconditions in the images. You can only create 10 projects duringthe trial period, capture and display can be done using asmartphone or camera and then imported into the app, in thisversion only support 640x480 resolution of video or images, whilethe processing is done by a powerful dedicated server (visitwww.r-3d-2-com for examples, manuals and technical support). Weprovide users with a range of parameters that can be adjusted inorder to obtain the best 3D reconstruction possible, as well asadvice as to how best to do 3D reconstruction depending on thecircumstances, ranging from obtaining .obj to terrainreconstruction to be compared to a digital elevation model forconstruction, agriculture or mining purposes.

We have now ported our optical system calibration module anddistortion correction module for the smartphone camera. This willfacilitate integration from multiple cameras. Soon, we will addthis facility to the site itself with a more advancedcapability.

The trial version has a licence of 30 days, when the trial periodhas finished, the app will be unable to be used anymore, and youcan download your projects.

Useful utilities currently include functions to:

* Extract a segment of MP4 videos.
* Join MP4 videos obtained from the same source.
* Extract constituent frames from a videos.
* Convert video in a wide range formats to MP4.
* Import images/video to currently selected project
* Export images/video from current project to SD card.
* Camera calibration and distortion correction modules.
* An enhanced-depth-of-field module for combining multiple imagesis now available on the server.
* Now able to produce 3D digital models from LWIR images.

The resolution of MP4 videos is 640x480 in the trial version.

3D reconstruction from video/images is now a mature and extremelyuseful technology, though it can be challenging to obtain goodresults where the object/terrain is large, illumination cannot becontrolled, under vibration, where multiple videos exist of anobject of interest, with partial or temporary occlusions, etc. inwhich case a substantial amount of pre-processing might benecessary prior to the 3D reconstruction process, which can betricky without a tool like R-3D-2!
