NREMT Certification examinations are intended toevaluate the competence of EMS practitioners at a variety oflevels: First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate/85, AdvancedEMT, EMT-Intermediate/99, and Paramedic. The tests address contentareas defined and validated by subject-matter experts, educators,and individuals working in EMS fields. As the tests provide onlyone source of information regarding examinee competence, they areused in conjunction with other indicators of training andexperience in the granting of certification. Taking the NREMT testor State EMT exam can be a painless experience if you are preparedwith the knowledge of the course material AND an understanding ofwhat to expect of the NREMT test itself. Over the years the NREMTexam format has changed from a linear exam (paper and pencil) tothe CAT exam. This is an adaptive exam and will vary in length. Itis not graded like a traditional linear exam. Technically, youshould know everything that was covered in the EMT coursematerials. There aren't any secret methods or insights that canreplace proper test preparation, but some things are common. Thetests are heavy in the basics. Know CPR and shock as well as all ofthe segment categories of the test itself i.e. Airway, Ventilationand Oxygenation; Trauma; Cardiology; Medical; and Operations. Knowthe major components of the airway and the normal ranges ofrespiration for adults and pediatric patients. Know diabeticemergencies and the various causes of syncope. You will see about15% of your questions related to pediatrics, and about 85% relatedto adults.
