The BSI Annual Congress is the most important gathering of theUKimmunology community and an outstanding international meeting asyouwill be able to conclude from our list of distinguishedspeakersfrom both the UK and overseas. Several members of theProgrammeCommittee have been members of BSI for many decades andhaveattended the Annual Congress every year, first as PhD studentsthenas postdocs and now as Professors. We have great memories ofsome ofthe exciting new concepts that we were first made aware ofin thesemeetings; from the discovery of the T cell receptor,theappreciation of the importance of dendritic cells,Inflammasomesignalling to name but a few highlights. It neverceases to amazeus that there always seems to be new developments inimmunologyjust on the horizon, even to this day and this is thescience thatthe BSI programme committee has tried to showcase foryou at thismeeting.

The representation of the interests of the junior members oftheBSI is and has always been one of the main driving forces oftheBSI as an organisation and this is exemplified by thecelebrationof their achievements in the “Bright Sparks” sessionwith prizesfor the best talks. These PhD and postdocs, who are allBSImembers, are the future of Immunology and will be the torchbearersfor the BSI in the future. Some of the most abiding memoriesformany senior BSI members are the first time an eminentimmunologistvisited their poster and showed appreciation of theirwork. Therewill be plenty of opportunity for this at the Congressin 2013.Reciprocally, many senior scientists have taken pride innoting theexcellence and scientific potential of junior members atthesemeetings and take pleasure in regaling colleagues about howtheywere the first to spot their potential before they publishedtheirNature, Science or Cell papers. Regardless of which point oftheage spectrum you are at, it is always a pleasure to meet upandsocialize with old colleagues, and the venue for the CongressinLiverpool is ideal for this.
The senior members of the BSI have many fond memories of boththescience and the social life of the Annual BSI Congress overmanyyears. Come to the Congress in 2013 and create a few ofyourown.
