This Basic Course in German has been des-ignedto assist United States Government representatives who require acommand of spoken German. The general concept of this text hasgrown out of the plan of Spoken Language courses prepared under theauspices of the American Council of Learned Societies during WorldWar II. But pattern drills and other exercises have been developedextensively at the Foreign Service Insti- tute to provide a muchfuller manipulation of forms and patterns. and
a conscious attempt has been-made to adapt situations andvocabulary to specific needs of the Foreign Service. And the courseis intended to
