IHF isresponsible for theorganisation of handball's major internationaltournaments, notablythe IHF World Men's Handball Championship,which commenced in 1938,and the IHF World Women's HandballChampionship, which commenced in1957. IHF was founded in 1946 tooversee internationalcompetitions. Headquartered in Basel, itsmembership now comprisesof 209 national federations. Each membercountry is also a part ofone of the six regional confederations:Africa, Asia, Europe, NorthAmerica and Caribbean, Oceania, andSouth and Central America.
