((Calibre 50, from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, areacharting, award-winning quartet founded in 2010 by EdenMuñoz(vocals, accordion), Armando Ramos (guitars, vocals), MartínLópez(tuba), and Augusto (drums). Their provocative name (afteranarmor-piercing bullet) was chosen as a symbol for theirmusic,which they hoped would penetrate geographical lines, fromMexicoand the United States to Latin America.
After playing gigs wherever they could -- from backyard partiestosmall restaurants -- they made a video of their song"TheInfiernito," which brought them to the attention of Disa andlandedthem a recording contract.
They made their full-length album debut with Renovar O Moririn2010. The album included the singles "Callejero yMujeriego,""Culiacán vs. Mazatlán" (a duet with Gerardo Ortiz), and"El TiernoSe Fue." As Calibre 50 began to receive airplay and gainattentionon YouTube, they set the stage for their 2011 breakoutalbum DeSinaloa Para el Mundo, which included the hit singles "ElTierno SeFue" and "Te Estoy Engañando con Otra."
Calibre 50 kept to a rigorous touring schedule and neverstoppedrecording. 2012's El Buen Ejemplo delivered no less thanfour hitsingles: "Mujer de Todos, Mujer de Nadie," "Bohemio Loco,""El BuenEjemplo," and "Gente Batallosa," the latter a duet with thebandCarnivale. The latter became the most played song of the yearinMexico and netted the band a Billboard Award for "Song of theYearVocal Collaboration."
Calibre 50's work ethic was as inspiring as it was exhausting.InFebruary of 2013, they issued La Recompensa. Its firstsingle,"Aquí Estoy," hit the top of the Regional Mexican Musicairplaycharts in both Mexico and the United States, followed insimilarfashion by "Ni Que Estuvieras Tan Buena," which was alsoradio'smost played song in the genre that year. Calibre 50 struckagain inOctober with Corridos de Alto Calibre. This collectionfeatured thesingle "El Immigrante," which not only topped the radiocharts, butremained in the number one spot for over ten weeks inMexico.
The intense pace of the road and the creative pressure inwritingand recording resulted in personnel changes for the band in2014.Lopez and Augusto were replaced by Alejandro Gaxiola on tubaandErick Garcia on drums for that year's Contigo album. It notonlynetted the band a number one spot for the title track single,butits full-length also claimed dominant spots.
Calibre 50 signed with Sony in late 2014. In January ofthefollowing year, Univision premiered the Televisia telenovela QueTePerdone Dios (a remake of 2000's Abrázame Muy Fuerte). The bandwasenlisted to deliver the theme song, "Aunque Ahora Estés con El."Itwas released as a standalone single and landed in the Top Fiveonvarious airplay charts. The quartet issued thenotoriouslycontroversial pre-release single "Se Nos Volvió a PelarMi Apá,"which was banned from airplay by some radio stations,thusaffecting its chart position. They followed it with "LaGripa,"which was released simultaneously in November with the Sonyalbum,Historia de la Calle. The 14-track set offered a wide varietyofCalibre 50 music showcasing northern corridos, reggae, cumbias,andrancheras that hit number one on the Latin Albums chart. Italsoincluded a cover of Joan Sebastian's "Amor Limosnero." InJuly2016, the pre-album single "Amor del Bueno" went to number oneonthe Regional Mexican Songs download and airplay charts. InearlySeptember, the band issued three more singles, each a weekapartfrom its successor: "Bola" was followed by "Siempre Te VoyaQuerer," and then "Pa´ Qué Me Hacen Enojar."
