WHAT IS A COMPASS

A compass is a navigational instrument that shows directions inaframe of reference that is stationary relative to the surface oftheearth. The frame of reference defines the four cardinaldirections(or points) – north, south, east, and west. Intermediatedirectionsare also defined. Usually, a diagram called a compassrose, whichshows the directions (with their names usuallyabbreviated toinitials), is marked on the compass. When thecompass is in use, therose is aligned with the real directions inthe frame of reference,so, for example, the "N" mark on the rosereally points to thenorth. Frequently, in addition to the rose orsometimes instead ofit, angle markings in degrees are shown on thecompass. Northcorresponds to zero degrees, and the angles increaseclockwise, soeast is 90 degrees, south is 180, and west is 270.These numbersallow the compass to show azimuths or bearings, whichare commonlystated in this notation.
