Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is anopenworld, tactical shooter utilising a third person perspectivewithan optional First-person view for gun aiming. Players playasmembers of the 'Ghosts', a fictional elite special operationsunitof the United States Army under the Joint SpecialOperationsCommand, similar to real life counterparts DEVGRU andDelta Force.[3] The game will not feature the futuristic settingused inAdvanced Warfighter and Future Soldier, but will insteadadopt amodern-day setting, similar to the original Tom Clancy'sGhostRecon. As a result, the equipment featured in the game willbebased on weapons and gear commonly used by military forcesaroundthe world.[4] However, the game will feature someoriginalequipment, such as drones that can be used to tag enemiesand showobjectives. These drones have limited abilities untilupgraded.[5]The game will be the first entry to feature an openworld, whichincludes nine different types of terrain, such as:mountains,forests, desert, salt flats, and will introduce a dynamicweathersystem as well as a day-night cycle.[6] Completing missionsduringdaytime allows players to spot enemies easily, whilecompletingmissions at night grants players a tactical advantage, asthe nightoffers players better concealment.[4] Players are taskedwithmaking observations before carrying out missions. A varietyofvehicles, such as dirt bikes, helicopters and dune buggies,willfeature in the game.[4] Wildlands will featureside-missions,unlike its predecessors.[6]

When completing missions, players can reach the location wherethemission starts through a variety of ways. Players canparachutefrom a helicopter, walk overland, or drive towardstheirobjectives.[7] Players are allowed to use multiple ways tocompleteobjectives, such as utilizing stealth, melee combat, orusing thelong-ranged or short-ranged weapons provided in the game.Betweenmissions, players are free to explore the game's world, andthegame will feature outposts that can be taken down byplayers.[8]Players can grab enemies at close range with one handfor defense,while using the other hand to shoot.[9]
