**** Ghalib (Urdu: غالب‎; Hindi: ग़ालिब) born Mirza Asadullah BaigKhan on 27 December 1797 was a classical Urdu and Persian poet fromthe Mughal Empire during British colonial rule. Most notably, hewrote several ghazals during his life, which have since beeninterpreted and sung in many different ways by different people.Ghalib, the last great poet of the Mughal Era, is considered to beone of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdulanguage.

**** Mir Taqi Mir (Urdu: مِیر تقی مِیرؔ‎—; Hindi: मीर), whosereal name was Muhammad Taqi, was born in Agra, India (then calledAkbarabad) in August 1723. Mir was the leading Urdu poet of the18th century, and one of the pioneers who gave shape to the Urdulanguage itself. He was one of the principal poets of the DelhiSchool of the Urdu ghazals and remains arguably the foremost namein Urdu poetry. Ghalib himself acknowledged, through some of hiscouplets, that Mir was indeed a genius who deserved respect.

**** Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq (Urdu: شیخ محمد ابراہیم ذوؔق‎;Hindi ज़ौक़) ) was an Urdu poet and scholar of literature, poetry andreligion. Born in 1789, he was a poor youth, with only ordinaryeducation, who went on to acquire learning in history, theology andpoetics in his later years. Zauq was appointed poet laureate of theMughal Court in Delhi just at the age of 19. He was a prominentcontemporary of Ghalib, and the rivalry of the two poets is quitewell known.

**** Daag Dehlvi (Urdu: داغ دہلوی‎, Hindi: दाग़ देहलवी) was bornNawab Mirza Khan on 25 May 1831. Daag was an outstanding Mughalpoet famous for his Urdu ghazals. Belonging to the old Delhi schoolof Urdu poetry, he wrote romantic and sensuous poems and ghazals insimple and chaste Urdu, minimizing usage of Persian words.

**** Syed Akbar Hussain Rizvi, more popularly known as AkbarAllahabadi (Urdu: اكبر الہ آبادی, Hindi: अकबर इलाहाबादी ) was bornin October 1846. The hallmark of his poetry was his sense ofhumour, whether the poems dealt with love or politics. He alsooften used English words in his Urdu compositions. Professionally,Akbar retired as a session judge in Allahabad High Court. For hisjudicial services, British Government of the time awarded him thetitle of "Khan Bahadur".
