Isan also written as Isaan, Isarn, Issan, or Esarn; fromPaliīsān or Sanskrit īśān "Northeast" is the northeastern regionofThailand. It is located on the Khorat Plateau, bordered bytheMekong River (along the border with Laos) to the north and east,byCambodia to the southeast and the Prachinburi mountains southofNakhon Ratchasima. To the west it is separated from NorthernandCentral Thailand by the Phetchabun mountain range.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, northeasternThailandhas been generally known as Isan, a term adopted fromSanskritIshan, meaning in a “north east direction”, while inofficialcontexts the term phak tawan-ok-chiang-nuea(ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ;"Northeastern region") may be used. The term"Isan" was derivedfrom Isanapura, the capital of the Chenlakingdom. The Lao-speakingpopulation of the region, who comprise themajority, distinguishthemselves not only from the Lao of Laos butalso from the centralThai by calling themselves Khon Isan or ThaiIsan. TheKhmer-speaking minority and Kuy (Suai), who live in thesouth ofIsan, speak dialects and follow customs more similar tothose ofCambodia than either the Thai people or the Lao people
