Utopia was co-founded by Sherry and hermother,Amy in August 2001. With little experience in the fashionretailbusiness, their concept was simple – to celebrate and sharetheirunique love of Asian ethnic wear.

Beginnings were humbling when they operated from a tiny storeinBugis Village Market, within a non air-conditioned unitinSingapore’s tropical climate. The purple eclectic store withthebutterfly theme quickly attracted many customers lookingforinteresting, unique fashion that spoke individuality.Merchandisewas personally sourced from the region in limitedquantities withnew arrivals weekly. Customers would wait a fewhours at the storesto get first hand pickings of these newarrivals. The little utopiastore quickly relocated to a biggerstore within Bugis VillageMarket within 6 months

After a full year of learning period and with boostedconfidence,the duo finally launched their utopia label at Far EastPlaza LevelOne in December 2002. Operating from a 170 square feetshop to ayoung, fashion forward crowd, business was brisk andutopia becameone of the favorite haunts for fashionistas, lookingfor unique intheir wardrobe.

In a bid to establish the utopia brand as more of anoriginallabel than a multi-label imported boutique, both foundersworked onexpanding their design line with unusual creations,instead ofrelying on foreign imports. Their designs celebrate thewarm,exotic Asian heritage. Utopia’s designs invoke nostalgiaofSingapore’s multi-cultural background, influenced heavily bythethe Peranakans, the Indians, the Malays, & the Chinese,amongstothers. Tapping inspiration from many different culturesonfrequent sourcing trips, utopia’s designs grew to a lineofeclectic ethnic styles, inimitable and individualistic.

Utopia later expanded to other shopping hotspots inSingaporelike Plaza Singapura, Bussorah Street, Vivocity andParkway Paradeover the 10 year period. Today, utopia has 3 storesin Singaporeand is expanding its distribution network overseas.Till date,utopia’s sequin work on traditional batik remained one ofthe mostpopular designs. The label is growing every day but thebrandessence remains the same. Fusing contemporary, high fashionstyleswith traditional fabrics and handiwork, Utopia aspires tospreadthe Asian culture, with modern interpretation.
