Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is afictionalmale reindeer, usually depicted as a young calf whobarely hasantlers, with a glowing red nose, popularly known as"Santa's NinthReindeer." When depicted, he is the lead reindeerpulling Santa'ssleigh on Christmas Eve. The luminosity of his noseis so greatthat it illuminates the team's path throughinclement winterweather.

Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet writtenby RobertL. May and published by Montgomery Ward.

The story is owned by The Rudolph Company, LP and hasbeenadapted in numerous forms including a popularsong, atelevision special and sequels, and a featurefilm andsequel. Character Arts, LLC manages the licensing forthe RudolphCompany, LP. In many countries, Rudolph has become afigure ofChristmasfolklore. 2014 marked the 75th anniversary ofthecharacter and the 50th anniversary of the televisionspecial.A series of postage stamps featuring Rudolph was issued bytheUnited States Postal Service on November 6, 2014.

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), alsoknownas caribou in North America, is a speciesofdeer with circumpolar distribution, nativetoArctic, Subarctic, tundra, boreal and mountainous regionsofnorthern Europe, Siberia, and North America. Thisincludesboth sedentary and migratory populations.

While overall widespread and numerous, someofits subspecies are rare and at least one hasalreadygone extinct.

Reindeer vary considerably in colour and size. Inmostpopulations, both sexes grow antlersannually, but femaleslackantlers in a few. Antlers are typically larger on males.

Hunting of wild reindeerand herding ofsemi-domesticated reindeer (for meat,hides, antlers, milk andtransportation) are important to severalArctic and Subarcticpeoples. In parts of Sápmi, reindeerpullpulks.In Christmas folklore, SantaClaus'sflyingreindeer are well known for pulling hissleigh.
