Ele foi criado para suprir a necessidade por novastecnologias para uso no radioamadorismo. A pesquisa envolveufabricantes Japoneses de rádio e outros observadores. A Icomforneceu equipamentos usados para desenvolvimento e testes. Rádiose repetidoras D-Star foram testados exaustivamente e agora estãodisponíveis para uso público.

D-Star é um novo modo de transmissão para comunicações em vozdigital e dados. É uma forma eficiente e inovadora, criada porradioamadores para os radioamadores. Através de links via Internetou mesmo microcoondas (1.2GHz), é possível interconectarrepetidoras D-Star formando uma rede mudial de comunicação entreradioamadores.

O Sistema D-Star oferece recursos e funcionalidades inéditas queincrementam a eficiência de nossas comunicações. O nome D-Star vemde Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio, que em portuguêssignifica Tecnologias Digitais Inteligentes para o RadioAmador.
