Shri Ramcharitmanas also speltShriRamcharitamanasa, is an epic poem in Awadhi, composed bythe16th-century Indian poet Goswami Tulsidas(c.1532–1623).Ramcharitmanas literally means "lake of the deeds ofRama".Tulsidas compared the seven Kāndas (literally "books",cognate withcantos) of the epic to seven steps leading into theholy waters ofa Himalayan lake (Mānasa, as in Lake Manasarovar)which "whichpurifies the body and the soul at once". The core ofthe work is apoetic retelling of the events of the Sanskrit epicRamayana,centered on the narrative of Rama, the crown prince ofAyodhya. Thepoem is also called Tulsikrit Ramayan (literally, TheRamayancomposed by Tulsi or, loosely, The Ramayan of Tulsidas).
