Description

Bagalamukhi or Bagala is one of thetenmahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses) in Hinduism. BagalamukhiDevismashes the devotee's misconceptions and delusions (orthedevotee's enemies) with her cudgel. She is also known asPitambaraMaa in North India.
"Bagalamukhi" is derived from "Bagala" (distortion of theoriginalSanskrit root "valgā") and "mukha", meaning "bridle" and"face",respectively. Thus, the name means one whose face has thepower tocapture or control. She thus represents the hypnotic powerof theGoddess. Another interpretation translates her name as“cranefaced”.
Bagalamukhi has a golden complexion and her dress is yellow.Shesits in a golden throne in the midst of an ocean of nectar fullofyellow lotuses. A crescent moon adorns her head. Twodescriptionsof the goddess are found in various texts- TheDwi-Bhuja (twohanded), and the Chaturbhuja (Four handed).
