Parrots, also known as psittacines are birds of the roughly 393species in 92 genera that make up the orderPsittaciformes, found inmost tropical and subtropical regions. The order is subdivided intothree superfamilies: the Psittacoidea("true" parrots), theCacatuoidea (cockatoos), and the Strigopoidea (New Zealandparrots). Parrots have a generally pantropicaldistribution withseveral species inhabiting temperate regions in the SouthernHemisphere, as well. The greatest diversity of parrots is in SouthAmerica and Australasia. Characteristic features of parrots includea strong, curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs, and clawedzygodactyl feet. Many parrots are vividly coloured, and some aremulti-coloured. Most parrots exhibit little or no sexual dimorphismin the visual spectrum. They form the most variably sized birdorder in terms of length. The most important components of mostparrots' diets are seeds, nuts, fruit, buds, and other plantmaterial. A few species sometimes eat animals and carrion, whilethe lories and lorikeets are specialised for feeding on floralnectar and soft fruits.
