The event is the biggest social and sporting eventof the yearin Botswana, with locals and visitors from South Africaandneighbouring territories turning out in their droves to catchtheaction. After being based at Kumakwane, on the outskirtsofGaborone, for a number of years the race has moved toJwaneng,about 160 kilometres west of the Botswana capital. The movetoJwaneng, home of the world’s richest diamond mine, was attherequest of the Botswana Tourist Organisation. The DesertRacebrings a huge financial windfall to areas which stage theevent,and the BTO authorities are keen for other regions tobenefit.“There are 19 designated spectator points along the route,alongwith numerous vantage points that will be well known to thelocalpopulation,” said route director Adri Roets. “The area hadgoodrains in the wet season, and vegetation is nice and green.“Theroute, however, is going to be dry and very sandy with alltherocks, bushes and tree stumps part and parcel of this race.”The100 kilometre route for the June 27 qualifying race todeterminegrid positions will take competitors from Jwaneng towardsSesebefore branching towards Mokhamma.
