The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) isacomputer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE testcentersnationwide. PTCE scores are used to determine whetherindividualshave demonstrated the knowledge necessary to practice aspharmacytechnicians.
The PTCE is a two-hour, multiple-choice, exam that contains90questions (80 scored questions and 10 unscored questions).Eachquestion is shown with four possible answers, only one of whichisthe correct or best answer. Unscored questions are notidentifiedand are randomly distributed throughout the exam. Acandidate’sexam score is based on the responses to the 80 scoredquestions.One hour and 50 minutes are allotted for answering theexamquestions and 10 minutes for a tutorial and post-examsurvey.
The PTCE content was developed by experts in pharmacytechnicianpractice based on a nationwide Job Analysis Studycompleted inFebruary 2012. PTCB’s Certification Council and Boardof Governorsreviewed the 2012 Job Analysis Study and approved a newblueprintfor an updated PTCE, which launched on November 1,2013.
The PTCE assesses knowledge critical to pharmacy technicianpracticeorganized into nine knowledge domains, each with a numberof'knowledge areas' or sub-domains, as shown in the table below.Referto the full blueprint for more detail. As an aid to thosefamiliarwith the previous blueprint, PTCB provides a crosswalk toidentifywhere knowledge listed under the previous blueprint isorganizedwithin the new PTCE blueprint.
