NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is anationwideexamination for the licensing of nurses in the UnitedStates andCanada since 1994 and 2015, respectively.[2][3] There aretwotypes, the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN. After graduation fromaschool of nursing, one takes the NCLEX exam to receive his orhernursing license. A nursing license gives an individualthepermission to practice nursing, granted by the state where heorshe met the requirements.
NCLEX examinations are developed and owned by the NationalCouncilof State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN). The NCSBNadministersthese examinations on behalf of its member boards whichconsist ofthe boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District ofColumbia, and four U.S. territories, American Samoa, Guam, NorthernMarianaIslands and the Virgin Islands.
To ensure public protection, each board of nursing requiresacandidate for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEXexamination,NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN forvocational orpractical nurses. NCLEX examinations are designed totest theknowledge, skills and abilities essential for the safeandeffective practice of nursing at the entry-level.
NCLEX examinations are provided in a computerized adaptivetesting(CAT) format and are presently administered by Pearson VUEin theirnetwork of Pearson Professional Centers (PPC). The NCLEX isa typeof exam called a criterion-referenced examination. Accordingto thechapter, “NCLEX: What You Need to Know,” in the textbookNursingNow, a criterion-referenced examination is a “test thatcompares anindividual’s knowledge to a predetermined standardrather than tothe performance of others who take the same test.”[4]Withcomputerized exams such as this, the computer selectswhichquestion you are asked based on how you answered thepreviousquestion. The NCLEX covers a wide range of material. Theindividualwill be scored by their ability to think critically aboutdecisionsinvolving nursing care.
