The Harz is the most northerly upland of central Europe. Morethan1,000 metres high, it rises well above its surroundings andisvisible from afar. Its highest point, the Brocken (1,141 m) isevenabove the natural forest line. Its summit is covered bysubalpinedwarf shrub heathland free of trees. Wurmberg,Achtermannshöhe andBruchberg are other distinct summits higher than900 metres. Theylie within the realm of mountain spruce forests, asdoes the KleineBrocken.
In Harz National Park, a wilderness of fascinating extent andbeautyis developing. Here, a natural landscape exceptional inCentralEurope is evolving on nearly 250 km2. The national parkprotectsthese valuable areas permanently in order to allow natureto developfreely and to preserve biodiversity.

You can experience the beauty and fascination of wildnatureparticularly well on small hiking and mountain tracks onthe“Hohnekamm” in Harz National Park. Follow us on a hike rightintothe middle of an area that lynx are exploring again these days,inwhich they are hunting for prey, but are always avoidingpeople.The route goes through typical lynx habitat, past rocks,bogs andthrough wild forests.
