Among the statements made by the commission were evidence oflaxsecurity, eyewitness testimony of the final moments of thefatalplane crash, and the conclusion that though the terroristswerefrom certain countries, there was no evidence to prove thattheywere funded by the governments of those countries.

It traces the genesis of the dreaded terroristorganizational-Qaeda and portrays in great detail how they wereable toinfiltrate the country and plan their operations.

The report directly led to more U.S. emphasis on diplomacyandmore counterinsurgency efforts in Afghanistan. Some criticspannedthe report deeming it merely cosmetic in nature and onlyskimmingthe surface of the real issues. Yet the book remains anengrossingand riveting slice of history, which makes interestingreading forboth casual readers and those engaged in politics,counterterrorismor diplomacy.

It has been authored by several people and far from beingaboring tract on administrative matters, is written in adramaticand lyrical style. It zoomed to the top of the bestsellerchartswhen it was first published and became a contender forthenon-fiction prize in the National Book Awards. It has alsobeenadapted for film and television. One of the notable featuresisthat the point of view contained in this book remainscompletelyneutral and unbiased in spite of the great emotionalimpact theevents depicted had on the psyche of a nation.
