Arunachala refers to the holy hill at Thiruvannamalai inTamilNadu. The hill is also known by the names Arunagiri,AnnamalaiHill, Arunachalam, Arunai, Sonagiri and Sonachalam.It isone of thefive main shaivite holy places in South India.

Over the centuries, many saints and sages have been drawntoArunachala. The Saivite saints Manickavachagar, Appar,Sambandarand Sundarar are four examples. In the fifteenth century,GuhaiNamasivaya, Guru Namasivaya and Virupaksha Deva came fromKarnatakaand settled on Arunachala. Saint Namasivaya lived in oneofArunachala's caves which is still known by his name.VirupakshaDeva lived in an OM-shaped cave higher up on the Hill,and thiscave too still bears his name.Located on the south-eastslope ofArunachala, this was the cave that Sri Ramana Maharshilived infrom 1899 to 1916.
