The Hanuman Chalisa (Devanagari: हनुमान चालीसा; Hindipronunciation: [ɦənʊmaːn tʃaːliːsaː]; literally Forty chaupais onHanuman) is a Hindu devotional hymn (stotra) addressed toHanuman.[1][2] It is traditionally believed to have been authoredby Tulsidas in the Awadhi language,[1] and is his best known textapart from the Ramcharitmanas.[3][4] The word "chālīsā" is derivedfrom "chālīs", which means the number forty in Hindi, as theHanuman Chalisa has 40 verses (excluding the couplets at thebeginning and at the end).[1] Hanuman is a vanara (a monkey-likehumanoid deity), a devotee of Rama, and one of the centralcharacters in the Sanskrit epic Ramayana. Folk tales increasinglyeulogise the powers of Hanuman, and he is considered by many to bean avatar of the god Shiva.[5] The qualities of Hanuman – hisstrength, courage, wisdom, celibacy, devotion to Rama and the manynames by which he was known – are detailed in the HanumanChalisa.[5] There are more temples devoted to Hanuman than anyother deity in India, and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa is acommon religious practice.
