The Divine Comedy is an epic poem written by DanteAlighieribetween c. 1308 and his death in 1321. It is widelyconsidered thepreeminent work of Italian literature, and is seen asone of thegreatest works of world literature. The poem'simaginative andallegorical vision of the afterlife is a culminationof themedieval world-view as it had developed in the WesternChurch. Ithelped establish the Tuscan dialect, in which it iswritten, as thestandardized Italian language. It is divided intothree parts:Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels throughHell,Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, itrepresentsallegorically the soul's journey towards God.At thisdeeper level,Dante draws on medieval Christian theology andphilosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologicaof ThomasAquinas.Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called"the Summain verse".
