Description

The Hanuman Chalisa (Forty chaupais) is aHindu devotional hymn (stotra) addressed to Bajrang Bali. It istraditionally believed to have been authored by 16th-century poetTulsidas in the Awadhi language, and is his best known text apartfrom the Ramcharitmanas. The word "chalisa" is derived from"chalis", which means the number forty in Hindi, as the HanumanChalisa has 40 verses (excluding the couplets at the beginning andat the end). Hanumanjee is a Hindu god and an ardent devotee of Rama. He is acentral character in the Indian epic Ramayana and its variousversions. He is also mentioned in several other texts, includingMahabharata, the various Puranas and some Jain texts. A vanara,Anjaniputra participated in Rama's war against the demon kingRavana. Several texts also present him as an incarnation of LordShiva. He is the son of Kesari, and is also described as the son ofVayu, who according to several stories, played a role in hisbirth.
