Dragon Ball (Japanese: ドラゴンボール Hepburn:DoragonBōru?) is a Japanese media franchise created by AkiraToriyama. Theinitial manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama,was serializedin Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with the519 individualchapters collected into 42 tankōbon volumes by itspublisherShueisha. Dragon Ball was initially inspired by theclassicalChinese novel Journey to the West. The series follows theadventuresof the protagonist, Son Goku, from his childhood throughadulthoodas he trains in martial arts and explores the world insearch of theseven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which summon awish-grantingdragon when gathered. Along his journey, Goku makesseveral friendsand battles a wide variety of villains, many ofwhom also seek theDragon Balls.

The Dragon Ball manga has been adapted into two animeseriesproduced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z,whichtogether were broadcast in Japan from 1986 to 1996.Additionally,the studio has developed 19 animated feature films andthreetelevision specials, as well as two anime sequel seriestitledDragon Ball GT (1996–1997) and Dragon Ball Super(2015–present).From 2009 to 2015, a revised, faster-paced versionof Dragon Ball Zaired in Japan under the title Dragon Ball Kai, inwhich most ofthe original version's footage not featured in themanga isremoved. Several companies have developed various typesofmerchandising based on the series leading to a largemediafranchise that includes films, both animated andlive-action,collectible trading card games, numerous actionfigures, along withseveral collections of soundtracks and a largenumber of videogames. As of November 2014, the franchise generated$5 billion inmerchandise,[1] making Dragon Ball one of the mostmerchandisableanime based media franchises of all time.

On April 28, 2015, Toei Animation announced Dragon BallSuper(ドラゴンボール超 Doragon Bōru Sūpā?), the first all-new DragonBalltelevision series to be released in 18 years. It debuted onJuly 5and will run as a weekly series at 9:00 am on Fuji TV onSundays.Masako Nozawa reprised her roles as Goku, Gohan, and Goten.Most ofthe original cast reprise their roles as well. KouichiYamadera andMasakazu Morita also reprise their roles, as Beerus andWhis,respectively. The story of the anime is set four years afterthedefeat of Majin Boo, when the Earth has become peaceful onceagain.Akira Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as wellfor"original story & character design concepts." It is alsobeingadapted into a companion manga.
