Dora the Explorer is an Americaneducationalanimated TV series created by Chris Gifford, ValerieWalsh, andEric Weiner. Dora the Explorer became a regular series in2000. Theshow is carried on the Nickelodeon cable televisionnetwork,including the associated Nick Jr. channel. It aired on CBSuntilSeptember 2006. A Spanish-dubbed version first aired as partof aNick en español block on NBC Universal-owned TelemundothroughSeptember 2006; since April 2008, this version of theprogram hasbeen carried on Univision as part of the Planeta Ublock. Theseries is co-produced by Nickelodeon Productions andNickelodeonAnimation Studio. Dora the Explorer is one of thelongest-runningshows of Nick Jr. During the sixth season, the showbecame the NickJr. series with most episodes, surpassing Blue'sClues with 143episodes, having 144 after it had completedbroadcasting ontelevision. It won a Peabody Award in 2003 "foroutstanding effortsin making learning a pleasurable experienceforpre-schoolers."

The series centers around Dora, a 7 (Later 8) year old Americangirlof Indigenous Mexican heritage, with a love of embarking onquestsrelated to an activity that she wants to partake of or aplace thatshe wants to go to, accompanied by her talking purplebackpack andanthropomorphic monkey companion named Boots (namedfor his belovedpair of red boots). Each episode is based around aseries ofcyclical events that occur along the way during Dora'stravels,along with obstacles that she and Boots are forced toovercome orpuzzles that they have to solve (with "assistance" fromthe viewingaudience) relating to riddles, the Spanish language, orcounting.Common rituals may involve Dora's encounters with Swiper,a bipedal,anthropomorphic masked thieving fox whose theft of thepossessionsof others must be prevented through fourthwall-breaking interactionwith the viewer. To stop Swiper, Doramust say "Swiper no swiping"three times. However, on occasionswhere Swiper steals thebelongings of other people, the viewer ispresented with thechallenge of helping Boots and Dora locate thestolen items. Anotherobstacle involves encounters with another oneof the program'santagonists; the "Grumpy Old Troll" dwellingbeneath a bridge thatDora and Boots must cross, who challengesthem with a riddle beforepermitting them the past that needs to besolved with the viewer'shelp. Known for the constant breaking ofthe fourth-wall depicted inevery episode, the audience is usuallypresented to two primarylandmarks that must be passed before Doracan reach her destination,normally being challenged with games orpuzzles along the way. Sometimes, the specialshaveinvolved the debut of new characters, such as the birth ofDora'ssuperpowered twin baby siblings and the introduction oftheenchanted anthropomorphic stars that accompany Dora on many ofherquests.
