Berdasarkan Undang-Undang Nomor 12 Tahun2012tentang Pendidikan Tinggi, juncto Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor4Tahun 2014 tentang Penyelenggaraan Pendidikan TinggidanPengelolaan Perguruan Tinggi, juncto Peraturan MenteriRiset,Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi Nomor 2 Tahun 2015tentangPenerimaan Mahasiswa Baru Program Sarjana pada PerguruanTinggiNegeri, sebagaimana telah diubah dengan Peraturan MenteriRiset,Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi Nomor 45 Tahun 2015tentangPerubahan atas Permenristekdikti Nomor 2 Tahun 2015tentangPenerimaan Mahasiswa Baru Program Sarjana pada PerguruanTinggiNegeri, pola penerimaan mahasiswa baru program Sarjanadilakukanmelalui: Seleksi Nasional Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri(SNMPTN),Seleksi Bersama Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri (SBMPTN),dan SeleksiMandiri. SBMPTN 2016 adalah seleksi yang dilakukan olehPTN secarabersama di bawah koordinasi Panitia Pusat denganseleksiberdasarkan hasil ujian tertulis dalam bentuk cetak (PaperBasedTesting) atau menggunakan komputer (Computer Based Testing),ataukombinasi hasil ujian tertulis dan ujian keterampilancalonmahasiswa.
Pembiayaan penyelenggaraan SBMPTN dibebankan kepada pesertaseleksidan Kementerian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi.PesertaSBMPTN dari keluarga kurang mampu secara ekonomi danmempunyaiprestasi akademik tinggi dapat mengikuti SBMPTN tanpadibebanibiaya tetapi dibiayai melalui dana bantuan biayapendidikanBidikmisi.

SBMPTN 2016 is theselection made by theState together under the coordination of theCentral Committee withthe selection based on the results of thewritten examination inthe form of print (Paper Based Testing) orusing a computer(Computer Based Testing), or a combination of theresults of thewritten exam and skills test prospectivestudents.
