Urdu poetry (Urdu: اُردُوشاعرى‎ Urdū S̱ẖāʿirī) is a rich tradition of poetry and has manydifferent forms. Today, it is an important part of the cultures ofSouth Asia. There has to be a minimum of five couplets toform a ghazal. Couplets may or may not have the same thought. It isone of the most difficult forms of poetry as there are many strictparameters that one needs to abide by while writing ghazal. It isimportant to think about the topic as well as the theme of a ghazalbefore starting to write it. The first line of a ghazal mustinclude a refrain, which is a word or a phrase that can be easilyfitted into the other couplets. Each couplet of a ghazal is knownas Sher (شعر ). The first Sher is called Matla' (مطلع ). The lastSher is called Maqta' (مقطع ), but only if the poet uses his"Takhalus (تخلص )". Hamd حمّد is a poem in praise of Allah. Theword "hamd" is derived from the Qur'an, its English translation is"Praise". Marsiya مرثیہ is an elegy typically composed about thedeath of Hasan, Husain, or their relatives. Each stanza has sixlines, with the rhyme scheme AAAABB.
