Chess strategy consists of setting and achievinglong-termpositioning advantages during the game – for example,where toplace different pieces – while tactics concentrate onimmediatemaneuver. These two parts of the chess-playing processcannot becompletely separated, because strategic goals are mostlyachievedthrough tactics, while the tactical opportunities are basedon theprevious strategy of play. A game of chess is normallydivided intothree phases: opening, typically the first 10 moves,when playersmove their pieces to useful positions for the comingbattle; thenmiddle game; and last the endgame, when most of thepieces aregone, kings typically take a more active part in thestruggle, andpawn promotion is often decisive.

When a king is under immediate attack by one or two oftheopponent's pieces, it is said to be in check. A response toacheck is a legal move if it results in a position where the kingisno longer under direct attack (that is, not in check). Thiscaninvolve capturing the checking piece; interposing a piecebetweenthe checking piece and the king (which is possible only iftheattacking piece is a queen, rook, or bishop and there is asquarebetween it and the king); or moving the king to a squarewhere itis not under attack. Castling is not a permissible responseto acheck. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent;thisoccurs when the opponent's king is in check, and there is nolegalway to remove it from attack. It is illegal for a player tomake amove that would put or leave his own king in check.
In casual games it is common to announce "check" when puttingtheopponent's king in check, however this is not required by therulesof the game, and is not usually done in tournaments.
