Description

Batoidea is a superorder of cartilaginous fishcommonly known as rays and skates, approximately 560 describedspecies in thirteen families. They are in the fish subclassElasmobranchii, along with sharks, to which they are closelyrelated. Rays are distinguished by their flattened bodies, enlargedpectoral fins that are fused to the head, and gill slits that areplaced on their ventral surfaces.
