The Soča (in Slovene) or Isonzo (in Italian)(other namesFriulian: Lusinç, archaic German: Sontig, Latin:Aesontius orIsontius) is a 138 kilometres long river that flowsthrough westernSlovenia (96 kilometres) and northeastern Italy (43kilometres). AnAlpine river in character, its source lies in theTrenta Valley inthe Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at anelevation of 876metres. The river runs past the towns of Bovec,Kobarid, Tolmin,Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed bythe SolkanBridge, which is the second-longest stone arch in theworld and thelongest stone arch among train bridges) and Gorizia,entering theAdriatic Sea close to the Italian town ofMonfalcone.
In 2008 the Soca Valley became the first destination in Sloveniatobe selected by the European Commission as a European DestinationofExcellence.
