The American Standard Version (ASV) is rooted in the work that wasdone with the Revised Version (RV) (a late 19th-century Britishrevision of the King James Version of 1611). In 1870, an invitationwas extended to American religious leaders for scholars to work onthe RV project. A year later, Protestant theologian Philip Schaffchose 30 scholars representing the denominations of Baptist,Congregationalist, Dutch Reformed, Friends, Methodist, Episcopal,Presbyterian, Protestant Episcopal, and Unitarian. These scholarsbegan work in 1872. The RV New Testament was released In 1881; theOld Testament was published in 1885. The ASV was published in 1901by Thomas Nelson & Sons. In 1928, the International Council ofReligious Education (the body that later merged with the FederalCouncil of Churches to form the National Council of Churches)acquired the copyright from Nelson and renewed it the followingyear. The divine name of the Almighty (the Tetragrammaton) isconsistently rendered Jehovah in the ASV Old Testament, rather thanLORD as it appears in the King James Bible. The ASV was the basisof four revisions. They were the Revised Standard Version, 1971,the Amplified Bible, 1965, the New American Standard Bible, 1995,and the Recovery Version, 1999. A fifth revision, known as theWorld English Bible, was published in 2000 and was placed in thepublic domain. The ASV was also the basis for Kenneth N. The NEW LIFE Version, available SINCE 1969 - continues to be themost readable and most understandable Bible without sacrificingaccuracy. It is not a paraphrase, or man's idea of what the Biblesays. Truths expressed in the original are in no way violated.Leading clergy from most denominations endorse and approve its use.This unique translation is gender-correct (same as the King JamesVersion). All pronouns referring to Deity are capitalized. Shortsentences are used with the subject usually preceding thepredicate. No contractions are used. Many paragraphs are precededwith captions which summarize the content. There are no confusingfoot-notes. No obscene words are used in the text. Most OldTestament quotations in the New Testament are followed by thereference. Most words are limited to one meaning - a must for newreaders and people learning English as a second language! Example:To read "Paul stood before the court" could mean that Paul stood upfirst, then the court stood up. NEW LIFE Text would read "Paulstood in front of the court." The wording "A great storm came up"is never used.
