Bhagavad-Gita or, The Song Celestial (From theMahabharata) Being a Discourse Between Arjuna, Prince of India, andthe Supreme Being Under the Form of Krishna Translated from theSanskrit Text by Sir Edwin ArnoldThe Bhagavad Gita ("Song of God")is an important Sanskrit Hindu scripture. It is revered as a sacredscripture of Hinduism, and considered as one of the most importantreligious classics of the world. The Bhagavad Gita comprising 700verses, is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of the BhagavadGita is Krishna, who is regarded by the Hindus as the suprememanifestation of the Lord Himself, and is referred to within asBhagavan—the divine one. The Bhagavad Gita is commonly referred toas The Gita for short. The content of the Gita is the conversationbetween Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield beforethe start of the Kurukshetra war. Responding to Arjuna's confusionand moral dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as awarrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedanticphilosophies, with examples and analogies. This has led to the Gitaoften being described as a concise guide to Hindu philosophy andalso as a practical, self-contained guide to life. Maharishi MaheshYogi describes it as a lighthouse of eternal wisdom that has theability to inspire any man or woman to supreme accomplishment andenlightenment. During the discourse, Krishna reveals his identityas the Supreme Being Himself (Svayam bhagavan), blessing Arjunawith an awe-inspiring vision of his divine universal form.- Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Amazon.com ReviewNo child should be allowed to grow up without reading The JungleBooks. Published in 1894 and 1895, the stories crackle with as muchlife and intensity as ever. Rudyard Kipling pours fuel on childhoodfantasies with his tales of Mowgli, lost in the jungles of India asa child and adopted into a family of wolves. Mowgli is brought upon a diet of Jungle Law, loyalty, and fresh meat from the kill.Regular adventures with his friends and enemies among theJungle-People--cobras, panthers, bears, and tigers--hone thisman-cub's strength and cleverness and whet every reader'simagination. Mowgli's story is interspersed with other tales of thejungle, such as "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," lending depth and diversity toour understanding of Kipling's India. In much the same way Mowgliis carried away by the Bandar-log monkeys, young readers will becaught up by the stories, swinging from page to page, breathless, thrilled, and terrified. (Ages 9 to 12)ReviewCollection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1894. TheSecond Jungle Book, published in 1895, contains stories linked bypoems. The stories tell mostly of Mowgli, an Indian boy who israised by wolves from infancy and who learns self-sufficiency andwisdom from the jungle animals. The book describes the social lifeof the wolf pack and, more fancifully, the justice and naturalorder of life in the jungle. Among the animals whose tales arerelated in the work are Akela the wolf; Baloo the brown bear; ShereKhan, the boastful Bengal tiger who is Mowgli's enemy; Kaa thepython; Bagheera the panther; and Rikki-tikki-tavi themongoose.-- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Treasure Island 1.0

The striking jacket of this new edition of anold classic promises more than it delivers. Thirty-one plates,full-color but predominantly in earth-tone hues, are dropped intothe text, sometimes mindlessly. For example, the cover art, apirate digging in sand among pieces of eight, reappears on page 61,facing text that sketches the lives of pirates, "gentlemen offortune." The text never relates to the art. Ingpen's style isimpressionistic but evocative of N. C. Wyeth's illustrations forthe same title (Scribners, 1911, reissued by Time Warner, 1992);his plate of Blind Pow shows the subject in much the same pose. Insome paintings, Ingpen uses angle and perspective effectively;interest is added by superimposing people upon background, orvice-versa. Spot line drawings, some used more than once, accentmany pages. Unfortunately, in some cases, a subject is notrecognizable from one page to the next, and the hazyimpressionistic style makes it difficult to interpret somepictures. Although superficially handsome, this title has stiffcompetition from many other editions of Treasure Island , the Wyethedition, especially. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Amazon.com ReviewAnne Elliot, heroine of Austen's last novel, did something we canall relate to: Long ago, she let the love of her life get away. Inthis case, she had allowed herself to be persuaded by a trustedfamily friend that the young man she loved wasn't an adequatematch, social stationwise, and that Anne could do better. The novelopens some seven years after Anne sent her beau packing, and she'sstill alone. But then the guy she never stopped loving comes backfrom the sea. As always, Austen's storytelling is so confident, youcan't help but allow yourself to be taken on the enjoyable journey. From Library JournalAusten is the hot property of the entertainment world with newfeature film versions of Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility onthe silver screen and Pride and Prejudice hitting the TV airwaveson PBS. Jane Eyre 1.0

ReviewEarly responses to Jane Eyre, first published in 1847, were mixed. Some held the book to be anti-Christian, others were disturbed by aheroine so proud, self-willed, and essentially unfeminine. Themodern reader may well have trouble understanding what all the fusswas about. On the surface a fairly conventional Gothic romance(poor orphan governess is hired by rich, brooding Byronichero-type), Jane Eyre hardly seems the stuff from which revolutionsare made. But the story is very much about the nature of humanfreedom and equality, and if Jane was seen as something of arenegade in nineteenth-century England, it is because her story isthat of a woman who struggles for self-definition and determinationin a society that too often denies her that right. Butself-determination does not mean untrammeled freedom for men orwomen. Rochester, that thorny masculine beast whom Jane eventuallyfalls for, is a man who sets his own laws and manipulates the livesof those around him; before he can enter into a marriage of equalswith Jane he must undergo a spiritual transformation. Should thelesson sound dry, it's not. Jane Eyre is full of drama: fires, storms, attempted murder, and a mad wife conveniently stashed awayin the attic. This is very sexy stuff - another reason Victoriancritics weren't quite sure what to make of it.-- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Chris KellettProduct DescriptionThis is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented byauthor biography. This book features the table of contents linkedto every chapter. The book was designed for optimal navigation onAndroid.************ Jane Eyre is an 1847 novel by Charlotte Bronte, published by Smith, Elder & Company, London. It is one of themost famous of British novels. Charlotte Bronte first published thebook as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography under the pseudonym CurrerBell. The novel was an immediate critical and popular success.Especially effusive in his praises was William Makepeace Thackeray,to whom Charlotte Bronte dedicated the novel's second edition, which was illustrated by F. H. Townsend. Jane Eyre is afirst-person narrative of the title character, a small,plain-faced, intelligent, and passionate English orphan girl. Theplot follows the form of a Bildungsroman, a novel that tells thestory of a child's maturation and focuses on the emotions andexperiences that lead to her maturity. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This new edition of TheCommunist Manifesto, commemorating the 150th anniversary of itspublication, includes an introduction by renowned historian EricHobsbawm which reminds us of the document's continued relevance.Marx and Engels's critique of capitalism and its deleterious effecton all aspects of life, from the increasing rift between theclasses to the destruction of the nuclear family, has provenremarkably prescient. Their spectre, manifested in the Manifesto'svivid prose, continues to haunt the capitalist world, lingering asa ghostly apparition even after the collapse of those governmentswhich claimed to be enacting its principles. From Library JournalMay 1 to honor the 150th anniversary of the original publication ofMarx and Engels's masterpiece with this quality, affordablehardcover. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early inthe career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young"star-cross'd lovers"[1] whose deaths ultimately unite theirfeuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most populararchetypal stories of young, teenage lovers.Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romancesstretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Julietby Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasureby William Painter in 1582. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from bothbut, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed written between 1591 and1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597.This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it,bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.- Excerpted from Wikipedia

She made several failedattempts to escape before successfully making her way North, thoughit took years of hiding and slow progress. Eventually, she wasreunited with her children. For all biography and historycollections.(Library Journal )"Slavery is terrible for men, but it is far more terrible forwomen," Harriet Jacobs wrote in 1861. At that time she was anescaped slave living in the north, but the Fugitive Slave Law of1850 meant that she could not longer consider being in the northernstates a guarantee of freedom or safety. Her book is an eloquentrecital of the suffering that is slavery. Families broken apart;promises of freedom made but never kept; whippings, beatings, andburnings; masters selling their own children - all are recountedwith precise detail and a blazing indignation. Harriet Jacobs'master started pursuing her when she was fifteen; in disgust shecontinually refused and avoided him. Her first attempt at revengeand escape failed: she became the lover of a local unmarried whiteman and had several children, but even then her master refused tosell her. Finally, in desperation, she ran away and hid in anuninsulated garret, three feet high at its tallest point withalmost no air or light. She stayed there for seven years, enduringcold, heat, and a crippling lack of movement, always hoping tocatch a glimpse of her children through a crack in the walls asthey walked by on the road below her. At last she had a chance toescape to the North. Her story is a remarkable testimony to herstrength and courage, and an unrelenting attack upon theinstitution of slavery. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by EricaBauermeister (Erica Bauermeister )

The Essays of Montaigne 1.0
MobileReference
Translated by Charles Cotton, edited byWilliam Carew Hazlitt Essays --The book is a collection of a large number of short subjectivetreatments of various topics published in 1580. Montaigne's statedgoal is to describe man, and especially himself, with utterfrankness. He finds the great variety and volatility of humannature to be its most basic features. He describes his own poormemory, his ability to solve problems and mediate conflicts withouttruly getting emotionally involved, his disdain for man's pursuitof lasting fame, and his attempts to detach himself from worldlythings to prepare for his timely death. He writes about his disgustwith the religious conflicts of his time, believing that humans arenot able to attain true certainty (skepticism). The longest of hisessays, Apology for Raymond Sebond contains his famous motto, "Whatdo I know?" Montaigne considered marriage necessary for the raisingof children, but disliked strong feelings of passionate lovebecause he saw them as detrimental to freedom. In education, hefavored concrete examples and experience over the teaching ofabstract knowledge that has to be accepted uncritically. --Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Don Quixote 1.0

From Publishers WeeklyThis imposing volume presents the first part of the quest by thebeloved Don, whose name stands for chivalry and courage--"TheImpossible Dream." The book's heavy stock, binding and design allimpart an air of style and prestige, reinforced by Bogin's suavetranslation, which makes good use of abundant dialogue. (Thephraseology and vocabulary, however--"erstwhile," "apothecary,""coherence"--will be beyond younger readers.) Though the paintingsby Spanish artist Boix are masterfully executed, some lack thesweep expected from this panoramic work; much of the imagery issomewhat pallid, both in tone and emotional impact. And, though thearchitectural details, period apparel and scenery are all richlyevocative, the characters themselves are often small in scale anddwarfed by their stunning surroundings. Nevertheless, the presenceof an elegantly produced, picture book version of this classicmerits attention and applause. All ages.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalGrade 5 Up-- Cervantes's Don Quixote, the moniker and personaadopted by the addled Senor Quijada , who has read a few too manychivalric romances, hardly needs introduction to adults. However, most young people will have hardly heard him mentioned, much lesshad any firsthand contact with this larger-than-life literarycreation. Bogin has taken some of the more involving, outrageous, and well-known adventures of the knight errant and his squire,Sancho Panza, and put them together into a relatively briefnarrative that nonetheless is strikingly true to the tone and styleof the Spanish original. Her prose, lively and at times employingmodern vernacular to good effect, does full justice to Cervantes'smad Knight of the Sad Countenance. It begs reading aloud, and maywell start discussion and contemplation. Boix's illustrations aredelicate, detailed, gold-washed watercolors that create a kind offairy-tale ambience. They will grab readers' attention andimaginations and direct anyone picking the book up to delve into itand to find out what's going on. Taken as a whole, this is a lovelyjob of bookmaking, providing an examplary introduction to a classicwork. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent,Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Anthem 1.0
MobileReference
This is an electronic edition of the completebook complemented by author biography. This book features the tableof contents linked to every chapter. The book was designed foroptimal navigation on Android.************ Anthem is a dystopian fiction novella by Ayn Rand, first published in 1938. It takes place at some unspecified futuredate when mankind has entered another dark age as a result of theevils of irrationality and collectivism and the weaknesses ofsocialistic thinking and economics. Technological advancement isnow carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur at all) and theconcept of individuality has been eliminated (for example, the word"I" has disappeared from the language). As is common in her work,Rand draws a clear distinction between the "socialist/communal"values of equality and brotherhood and the "productive/capitalist"values of achievement and individuality.— Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
