In line with our missions to promote both free health careandawareness and road safety awareness and in our continuouseffortsto bring forth a fundamental change to the Lebanese childrenandyouth, we at GNK Foundation decided to take road safetyawarenessone step further. We are materializing this awareness intoa stateof the art Academy which will deliver to a vast slice of theyoungLebanese all they need to know about rules and ethics ofroadsafety and instill in them early and solid road safetyeducation.The idea of GNK TRAFFIC ACADEMY came after the loss of 16year oldGeorges Nassim Khoriaty in a car accident and wasfurtherconsolidated after witnessing the increasing number ofsenselessyouth losses on the unsafe Lebanese roads. Our visionwasincorporated by experienced educators and a specialized ITteaminto an accredited advanced e-learning based curriculum viaasoftware exclusively designed for the Academy and itseducationalneeds. In Lebanon, road traffic accidents represent theleadingcause of death. The rate of these accidents is constantlyrisingand they are most frequently hitting the under 30 year oldagegroups leading to their premature death and permanentdisability.Sadly, Lebanon has the worst record in road trafficaccidents inthe Arab world. Even though accurate statistics arelacking in thecountry, it is estimated that around 1000 people dieyearly and amuch higher number suffer serious incapacitatinginjuries secondaryto road traffic accidents. The costs andconsequences of thesesenseless human losses are significant. Withthis alarmingbackground and with GNK’s mission to enhancechildren’s lives andrights, initiating road safety awareness at anearly age topotential road users was conceived by us to be a highpriority. Thephrase “road users” refers to both drivers andpedestrians. As roaduser error is believed to be a majorcontributing factor, educatingLebanese road users about road safetyrules and ethics at a youngage has become an urgent necessity andis fundamental fordeveloping a sense of responsibility aboutvarious aspects of roadsafety.
