The Route of Medieval Churches is the name ofthe thematic route designed with the intention of thoroughlyfamiliarising interested tourists with a unique religious andcultural heritage found in the Carpathian Basin.This thematic routewas created with the purpose of presenting the medievalecclesiastical heritage of three geographical units, whichpreviously formed a historical region in the past: NortheastHungary, Kárpátalja (Subcarpathia) and the northern area of theregion called Partium. The route crosses Szabolcs-Szatmár-Beregcounty in Hungary, Satu Mare county in Romania and Transcarpathiain Ukraine. A web of common historical roots ties together thesethree administrative units.The historical monuments and memorials located in the north-westernpart of Partium with few exceptions do not belong to the mostwell-known tourist attractions, however from artistic andhistorical point of view, they would deserve a more increasedattention. Besides the ruinous or exemplarily refurbished castlesfeaturing modifications made in different historical periods andthe memorials of the famous representatives of literary history,the mainly protestant churches in villages and former countrytowns, featuring medieval ecclesiastical heritage, create asignificant part of the region’s tourist attractions. A part ofthis tour crosses Satu Mare county including eight medievalchurches located here, providing regular exhibitions andpresentation for the visitors in order to find out more about thehistory of the churchs’ construction, the destiny of theircongregations and their relics.The Route of Medieval Churches interactive application helps youto find out more about the tourist attractions along this thematicroute.
