The Number-puzzle (also called Gem Puzzle,BossPuzzle, Game of Fifteen, Mystic Square and many others) is aslidingpuzzle that consists of a frame of numbered square tiles inrandomorder with one tile missing. The puzzle was "invented" byNoyesPalmer Chapman, a postmaster in Canastota, New York, who issaid tohave shown friends, as early as 1874, a precursor puzzleconsistingof 16 numbered blocks that were to be put together inrows of four,each summing to 34. Copies of the improved FifteenPuzzle made theirway to Syracuse, New York by way of Frank, son ofNoyes, and fromthere, via sundry connections, to Watch Hill, RI,and finally toHartford (Connecticut), where students in theAmerican School forthe Deaf started manufacturing the puzzle and,by December 1879,selling them both locally and in Boston,Massachusetts. Shown one ofthese, Matthias Rice, who ran a fancywoodworking business inBoston, started manufacturing the puzzlesometime in December 1879and convinced a Yankee Notions fancygoods dealer to sell them underthe name of "Gem Puzzle". Inlate-January 1880, Dr. Charles Pevey, adentist in Worcester,Massachusetts, garnered some attention byoffering a cash rewardfor a solution to the Fifteen Puzzle.
