OutSmart Flu is an initiative at theUniversityof Wisconsin-Madison. With this app, we arecrowd-sourcing flusurveillance so that we Badgers can protectourselves and ourcommunity through social action.

Flu season always hits right in the middle of the schoolyear,with cases occurring from September to May and morefrequentlyduring the winter months. Students who get the flu aremore likelyto miss classes and exams and other parts of thecollegeexperience. Earlier awareness of a flu epidemic on a campuslikeours can help each of us to take preventive measures suchaswashing our hands longer and more often, getting the fluvaccine,and getting extra rest.

We created the OutSmart Flu app so that you can reportyourflu-like symptoms as they occur, or you can let us know thatyouare feeling well. This information is compiled to measurefluactivity across campus and will be made available to you.Usingthis strategy, OutSmart Flu aims to detect flu epidemicsearlierthan current methods and to see if this earlier awarenesscan helpmembers of our community take action to protect themselvesandothers from getting sick.
