証券会社や銀行等で、株式をはじめ有価証券の勧誘や売買などの証券業務に携わる人のことを外務員と呼びます。
外務員として活動するためには、外務員資格試験に合格し、金融庁に外務員として登録することが義務づけられています。
従来、外務員資格試験の受験資格は、日本証券業協会の協会員（証券会社や金融機関）の役職員等に限定されていましたが、平成16年9月から「二種外務員資格試験」、平成24年2月から「一種外務員資格試験」については、協会員の役職員以外の方も受験できるようになりました。
そのため、証券業務を行う企業で働きたい方、銀行等の窓口やコールセンターで派遣社員として働きたい方や、金融機関就職希望者、また最近の投資ブームから、株式について勉強している方の受験が増加しています。
